Articles and Videos

Welcome to the fascinating world of voice over work. In this blog I have helpful videos and articles about my journey as a voice over artist. I hope they help you the way countless other VO blogs have helped me (and continue to do so). It’s a wild ride and one I’m glad I decided to take. Come along with me on this exciting journey!

Setting Up a Home Studio

I wanted to share how I set up my home studio.  When I first started thinking about becoming an audio book narrator, my first major hurdle was figuring out where to “build” it. So many videos and websites suggested converting a walk-in closet to create a studio. I was so frustrated with this recommendation. How may people have walk-in closets? And if you are lucky enough to have such an indulgence, are you really going to convert it? I have never been affluent enough to have such a luxury. I am not knocking those with one, it would be glorious to have such a spacious place for my clothes, but every house I ever lived in was built well before walk-in closets became a staple. So I was forced to think outside the box (pun intended).

My solution came from hours scouring the internet late at night. I kept ending up looking at pop-up style booths. While these can be a great solution, they are costly and I didn’t see them standing up against my careless and destructive roommates (I had two toddlers at the time). I needed something sturdier.

I finally figured out that I could build one in the corner of my room, the furthest point from any windows. I purchased an “L” shower curtain rod to connect to the two walls in the corner, and hung moving blankets that you can get on Amazon or most big-box stores. I threw a thick comforter over the top to prevent sound from coming in the top of the space and hung sound proofing foam on the 2 bedroom walls (just like I did in this video) by gluing them to cardboard and nailing the cardboard panels to the wall. PRESTO! I had a sound proofed space in the corner of my bedroom.

When we recently moved, I was tasked with finding a new space to make my studio. I was fortunate in that there is a tiny “utility” space in the basement. It’s a very tight squeeze but this tiny corner was perfect for isolating sound. This video follows me through the process. I hope you find it helpful!
